READ THIS LETTER WE RECEIVED

The Effect Of Restrictions On Flying

As the FAA prepares to make the Washington DC airspace restrictions larger, more restrictive, and permanent, we feel you should read this letter we recently received.   The third and fourth paragraphs are especially poignant.

"I am inspired and I want to help.   Please accept my donation of $50 for the purchase of grass seed for your runway.

A few years ago my father, who owns 76 acres of land in Shirley Arkansas, had a similar experience.  He seeded his land and about 20 acres are on a hill;   Needless to say, biblical rains that he hasn’t seen since.  All of his grass seed washed away.

I am a member of the AOPA and I read Aeronews on the net daily.  I am not a pilot yet but I have had ground school.  I live in the Washington DC ADIZ and I haven’t started the flying program due to all of the restrictions imposed on this area.

I have much desire to fly and no desire to be shot out of the sky.”

People. . .  this guy is a “Freedom Loving American” and he is afraid of being shot out of the sky and has not taken up flying due to the "feel good" restrictions imposed by the mass of morons in DC who are uneducated about aviation.   These restrictions are ridiculous and we hope and expect each and every one of you to write your Senators and Representatives, local and national, and let them know how you feel.   Complaining to each other does no good at all and expecting AOPA, EAA or other organizations to do the work for you is not responsible.   Take the time to write your elected officials….after all, they keep taking their time to write you out of the sky.   If you are wondering, email is known to be ineffective.   If you are going to stand up for yourselves and our freedom to fly, please write a letter or call these people.  Your city could be next!

Currently we have received contributions for half of the 80 bags of grass seed needed to re-seed the runway extension at Lee Bottom Flying Field.   The support that we have received from our local “airport family” as well as those we have yet to meet has been heartwarming.  We cannot thank you enough for your support and love of "grass roots" aviation.

Right now, we are still in the middle of a drought that has kept us from reseeding and we hope to get it done in September and have the extension ready for next year's flying season.

Those of you who asked for a framed seed bag section should have them soon.   We had to order the frames and as soon as they get here, we will get them out to you.

Thanks for those that have contributed.

2005 Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheels Fly-In

September 24, 2005 - Lee Bottom Flying Field (64I)

The 9th Annual Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheels Fly-In is less than 6 weeks  away.   Please put it on your calendars, tell your friends to put it on their calendars, and look for next month’s newsletter that will have more details about the event.

If you have been putting off flying due to fuel prices, this is the day to drag it out of the hangar – September 24, 2005 (rain Sept 25).   Last year we had 210 aircraft on one day…….what will this year bring?

If you are looking for the best aviation fuel prices in order to plan your trip to the Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheel Fly-In, this is a great website www.airnav.com/fuel.

AIR&SPACE Home Page

Air & Space Magazine highlighted a photo of two Time Pieces aircraft in one of their recent editions.   The Cubs are from the St. Louis location which is based at Creve Coeur Airport.    The Time Pieces aircraft keep popping up here and there . . . and soon there will be another.    Keep reading to find out more.

Sinful Sunday this Sunday. . .

photo Drew Middleton

This month’s Sinful Sunday is this Sunday (August 14) and we thought a recap of last months would be appropriate.

The July event had around 50 aircraft in attendance and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.   There was a great mix of aircraft including two helicopters.   If you are looking for an excuse to fly, this is a great one.

We have noticed that ice cream has become a favorite tool for bribing others to go flying.  So, invite your significant other, son, daughter, mother, father, neighbor, coworker, or friend to go flying and if that doesn’t work, bribe them with an old-fashioned hand dipped ice cream sundae or milkshake.

Time Pieces Expansion

Ft. Myers location opening in August

We are excited to announce another Time Pieces location will be opening later this month in Ft. Myers, Florida at Page Field (FMY).     Glenn and Kristin Frith will be operating this location with their 1957 Super Cub.  Glenn currently operates an innovate charter operation using Pilatus aircraft and looks forward to providing owner flown fractional shares to pilots in the Super Cub as a different dimension to his existing business.  It will be an opportunity for all the pilots in sunny Florida to use a “fun airplane” much like they would a motorcycle or boat  - sightseeing and touring around the Gulf coast area.

If you have your pilots license and your instructor forgot to show you how to have fun with flying, or you fly for a living and have forgotten what "real flying" really is, or you just need a fun plane to fly, the Ft. Myers' operation is your solution.  Many have already inquired about purchasing a share so we expect it to sell out quickly.

If interested, please email inquiry@IFlyTimePieces.com or call 239-278-4359(IFLY) to be put on the contact list for this location.

Reflections of Freedom

One morning during Oshkosh, I had just enough time to duck inside one of the pavilions and the first thing my eyes focused on was a wonderful painting by Kristen Hill.    Seeing the specific painted scene made me reflect on the reasons I love to fly and what it means to me.   When I looked at the title of the piece and saw it was “Reflections On Freedom,” I immediately decided I would buy this piece before I left for home.   You can find the work on Kristin’s website and in the future you will be able to see it on a wall here on the field.    Kristin swore she would write me a letter restating the reason why it is titled the way it is.   When you read it in a future newsletter it will make more sense.   What I will tell you is that it features her father and his trusty Meyers OTW. (rld)

 One Six Right

We are extremely excited about the upcoming GA movie tiled “One Six Right.”   In the future, we hope to help the creator of this film distribute it to the masses.

This is the first GA film to get big bucks for production and the sneak peak we received at Oshkosh knocked us off our feet.    You won’t believe some of the footage in this documentary!  It is so good it is sure to move non-aviation people and give chills to those who already understand.

Go to the website and download the trailer to get a feel for the movie.   www.onesixright.com

AOPA Visits Lee Bottom

Julie Boatman, an editor for AOPA Pilot Magazine, recently came to Lee Bottom Flying Field for some time in one of the Time Pieces Cubs.   She was here working on a story that is slated to be in your  October issue.   Over a period of three days, we talked flying, practiced flying, and just simply went flying.   By chance, Julie chose to visit on the hottest week of an overheated summer yet insisted on being the first person to stay in our camping cabin.   We both enjoyed her visit and are glad to know AOPA has a real GA pilot in their midst.

What time are you on anyway?

Lee Bottom Flying Field is in a weird location for time zones.  We do NOT observe daylight savings time.  Next year, we hope this changes as Indiana is attempting to go to daylight savings time for the entire state.  This means that we are 5 hours from GMT (Zulu) time.

In the meantime, if you are calling us, the best time to call is M-F 9AM – 5PM.  And if we don’t answer, leave a message – it means we might be working on the runway, talking to someone else on the phone, or even better . . .flying.  If you have a phone number that comes up as PRIVATE or something similar, be prepared to leave a message and we’ll get back with you as soon as possible.

Lodging for Fly-In

Every year we try to secure some motel rooms at special rates for the fly-in.   But, since the Chautauqua Arts Festival in Madison, In, is also the same weekend, rooms are hard to find and the rates reflect the availability.

This year, we reserved a block of rooms at the newly renovated Clifty Inn BUT all are currently reserved.  However, if you are one of those that does not have a room reserved, we do have a few scattered at other locations.  If interested, give us a phone us or email us (email is usually easiest) with your request.  We will take your credit card number and book the room on your behalf.

If anyone has booked a room at the Clifty Inn and will not be using it, please notify us before you cancel your reservation – we probably have someone that could use your room.

Bowman Eagles Get Us In Hot Water

The Bowman Eagles, a flying club based at Bowman Field, recently made a very generous donation that has allowed us to install a hot water heater in the “out house.”   Now anyone camping on the field or staying in the cabin will be able to enjoy a hot shower.    Thanks to everyone from the Bowman Eagles for all your support.    Here is an excerpt from the letter they included with the donation.

“Because the R.A.A. has turned their backs on restoring the grass strip at Bowman, we have adopted Lee Bottom as our official turf field.  It is “priceless, and precious” where old men flying old planes go!   We hope to live long enough to see most of your projects come to be.”

These letters are awesome and they renew our energy to carry on.   We cannot thank them or anyone else like them enough for showing support for grass roots aviation.

New Standard for sale – D-31

The other day we received a call from a gentleman with a unique aircraft for sale.   His name is Peter Direnzo and he has a machine we would love to acquire but have neither the time nor budget to do so.  Therefore, we are hoping someone out there will give this machine a good home in the air, not on the ground.

The aircraft is the only New Standard D-31 ever built (developed from the D-29S) and is a certified machine.   It was designed as a trainer and is a scaled down D-25.  Should anyone be interested, please contact Peter at 440-449-8334.   Anyone with ideas of parking it as a static museum display need not call.

If you buy it and need it flown to its new home, I will do it for expenses. - rld

Why should I purchase a Time Pieces Franchise?

i can do the same thing on my own, can't I?

We are constantly asked questions about the Time Pieces business and the one that happens to be asked quite frequently:  “Why do I need to buy into the Time Pieces system?  I could do this on my own.”  The answer is usually, Yes maybe you could BUT . . .   why do you want to re-invent the wheel?  We provide many benefits to our individually owned and operated locations that have purchased the rights to our system.  There are too many to list but a few that might peak your interest . . .

-         We’ve already made all of the expensive mistakes keeping you from doing the same.

-         The cost to set-up a program at the same detail and professional level would cost you a minimum of 5 times our going franchise rate.

-         Marketing materials and systems with previous mentions in most of the nationally recognized aviation publications:  AOPA Pilot Magazine, Flying, Plane and Pilot, GA News, and Areo News Network not to mention many regional and type specific publications like Midwest Flying, Piper Flyer, Piper Magazine and more.

-         Tailwheel training program standards and philosophy that goes above and beyond the minimums to ensure safety.  SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT!

-         Operations manual covering details in everything you need to know to set-up and operate your business.

-         Insurance program

-         There are strength in numbers when it comes to obtaining discounts.

-         A customer base that knows what they will be getting by doing business with you because you are part of an established and respected operation.  Example, when you go to McDonalds and order fries, you already know how they will taste.   This is something that has been missing from aviation from day one.

It's on the porch

In addition to the pop machine on the porch, there are a few other amenities for your enjoyment.  In the freezer, you’ll find ice cream bars for the warm days and Breakfast sandwiches and Muffins (microwave also available) for the early morning visitors.  There are tea bags, hot chocolate, oatmeal, popcorn, crackers, and other items in the white cabinet – lots of paper products(plates, napkins, cups, utensils, etc.) in the bottom section of the white cabinet.  The new water cooler has hot and cold water.  It’s all based on the honor system but there for you to enjoy while visiting the Lee Bottom Flying Field.

WANTED: Experienced Tailwheel CFI's in Ft. Myers

The new Time Pieces location at Ft. Myers has one CFI that is currently slated to work with the new owners in the Super Cub.  However, to be able to accommodate the anticipated level of interest, we are looking for at least one additional instructor.  To be qualified, CFI’s must have previous tailwheel experience and will be required not only to go through a Time Pieces CFI instructor program but to abide by the philosophy in our program.  We are nearing 2500 hours of accident free tailwheel flying within the Time Pieces program and plan to keep the same continued safety record as we grow.

WANTED:  Hangar Space in Houston, Texas Area

Another franchise for the Houston, Texas area is in the works with an anticipated early 2006 opening.  A stumbling block for this location has been the availability of affordable hangar space.  We prefer to be located at a good GA airport on the Western or Southern  part of the city.  Maybe our readers will have suggestions for availability – although being the sole occupant in the hangar is preferred, sharing a hangar, a community type hangar, business hangar with space, or hangar space on a private field would also be welcome.

Are you one of us?

Do you enjoy flying for the fun of it?  One of the main goals of each Time Pieces location is to provide fun flying opportunities.  The interesting thing is that we have a wide variety of people involved with different skills and levels of aviation experience.  Our owner’s respective aviation backgrounds do not seem to affect the enjoyment derived from flying a Time Pieces aircraft, they all seem to equally enjoy the simplicity and freedom of the low and slow aspect of flight.

Just look at a recap of the owners involved at the Creve Coeur location. . .

The 15 Creve Coeur share owners continue to enjoy their Cubs regularly. The two Cubs are flying on an average of 20 hours per month. The 15 owners represent a cross section of general aviation pilots.

Among them, there are sport pilots, private pilots, commercial pilots, ATP's and even a student.  Their ages range from 25 to 72,  4 are working on advanced ratings,  6 owners had no tailwheel time when they purchased their share and their hours range from 20 to 16,500.

Email us if you are interested in share availability in Indianapolis (MQJ), Creve Coeur, St. Louis (1H0), and Ft. Myers(FMY).  Become one of us today . . .
